From the page: "As ethanol from corn comes under fire due to rising corn prices, attention is turning to other ethanol sources. Plans are in the works to build a plant in northwest Indiana which would make ethanol from municipal waste. Approval of the plant was announced by the Lake County Solid Waste Management Board in January 2007.
And Chicago's WBEZ reported this week that Indiana Ethanol Power is now ready to go with its plan. The technology, developed by James Titmas at GeneSyst, would produce 20 million gallons of fuel-grade ethanol and other products each year."

From the page: "Venture-capital investing remained steady during the second quarter despite a general slowdown of the U.S. economy. But mature startups are finding it difficult to move out of the nest, forcing investors to devote more of their money and time to later-stage companies at the expense of younger ones.
In the U.S., venture capitalists invested some $7.4 billion, unchanged from last year, according to the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association, based on data provided by Thomson Reuters.
Venture-capital activity in Washington remained flat, although the top deals were smaller than in the past."

More businesses considering wisdom of crowds

From the page: "We've heard a lot about the "wisdom of crowds" in recent years, mostly in relation to Internet sites that let their readers make key decisions.
Digg.com, for instance, is a news site that lets its readers choose which stories are most important. Then there's Yelp.com, which lets users review products and services in hopes of gaining a consensus.
Now it seems that some of that Web 2.0 philosophy is rubbing off on more traditional businesses. Companies like Threadless, a T-shirt company in Chicago, and Ryz, an athletic shoe company in Portland, Ore., are making it possible for consumers to design shirts and shoes. Consumers then vote for their favorites, and those are the products these companies sell over the Internet."

From the page: "On the tech conference circuit, Yahoo, Microsoft and Google are the typical deep-pocketed sponsors. But when the tech is geared toward women, the pockets are those of Chevrolet, Macy's, and K-Y Jelly.
Here at the BlogHer 2008 conference, nearly 3,000 female bloggers are surrounded by the very mainstream-brand advertisers that the Internet media industry has clamored to attract for the last 10 years. It takes just a few moments to notice the stark difference in marketing pitches."

From the page: "People give you this whole rap about how easy saving the planet is. Change a light bulb and save the world. Yes and no. How about we consider it a start rather than an end destination?
Lighting accounts for about 20% of our electric bills. Traditional bulbs burn heat rather than light, so are extremely inefficient. Compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) are 80% more efficient and can last up to 10 times longer than a traditional bulb. Last December, Congress voted to phase out the inefficient incandescent. By 2012, the 100-watt bulb will be history."

From the page: "After being fairly fearful as a child, I am happy to say that not much genuinely scares me nowadays. The list of things that make me want to hide under the covers at night is quite short: clowns, Teletubbies, Pee Wee Herman, SPAM (the kind in the can), Disco. Overall, then, I am a pretty happy and peaceful fellow... though like all humans I still have my moments of nervousness and anxiety.
Nevertheless, I have often experienced periods of serious dread and despair when it comes to the environment. Even when my green aura does not develop streaks of black, I frequently sense an underlying fear about the future state of the Earth and my life upon it."

From the page: "We already know about the myriad of problems around the world caused by drought, water delivery restrictions and inadequate access to clean water. And weā€ve already heard the argument that global warming is to blame for such water shortages. A report recently released by the advocacy group Transparency International provides another reason for the global water crisis: corruption."

From the page: "With the executive ban on offshore drilling officially lifted by President Bush, the deciding factor now lies with Congress and the legislative ban that must also be lifted in order for drilling to occur. If this were to happen actual prices at the gas pump would not immediately decrease. The White House openly states there is no ā€oequick fix” for the price of oil however starting now can help in the future. More politicians are openly expressing their support for allowing offshore drilling and exploration."

From the page: "Certainly it may not have helped in the furore that followed a UN CITES decision to allow Chinese access to Africa's ivory that two Chinese women were caught in Kenya, a country opposed to the deal, trying to smuggle more that 36 pieces of ivory worth millions of dollars.
Stinking or controversial as it may have been, China now has the wonderful opportunity to stock "legally obtained" African ivory in the mix of those acquired illegally in a superbly coordinated international ring that continues to deplete Africa of its wildlife resources.
Chinese nationals have been implicated in illegal ivory seizures in more than 20 African nations in the last few years."
